Summer Benefit Program Is Back!

The Cooperative Education & Career Readiness office at Lakeland University has developed five separate company partnerships through which students can earn free housing or extra money for textbooks this summer. By working for one of these five employers for the duration of the summer, students will be eligible to receive an extra $1,050 in addition to their wages to cover their housing costs, or a bonus to cover the cost of textbooks next semester. The companies are:

  • The Osthoff Resort
  • Blue Harbor Resort
  • Kohler
  • Johnsonville Sausage
  • The Boys and Girls Club of Sheboygan County

These employers provide students with a variety of opportunities in different industries, great wage potential, as well as full- and part-time options. In addition to this housing benefit, all students are eligible to earn up to four Cooperative Education credits for free by working at employers in Sheboygan County. For more details about the positions and requirements of the program, please contact career@lakeland.edu.

Lakeland University Acquiring Jake’s Café!

Lakeland is expanding into downtown Sheboygan to provide more access to its award-winning Cooperative Education program, recruit the next generation of entrepreneurially minded students and position the institution as a significant resource and partner for the region.

Thanks to the generosity of some well-known local innovators, the university is acquiring Jake’s Café at 529 Ontario Ave., right next to The Founder Club, and renaming it Jake’s, a Lakeland Community.

Jake’s, a Lakeland Community, will serve as a collaborative “Communiversity” (community university) that combines Lakeland’s Cooperative Education program with university intellectual resources to create an environment for learning and practice. It will also serve as a resource for students who are interested in connecting with the community, especially the entrepreneurial side. In addition to expanded programing, Jake’s will continue to host creative communities and startups.

“Jake’s, a Lakeland Community, will attract new students who are tomorrow’s entrepreneurs and create new ways for Lakeland to serve as a broader resource to help elevate our community. Whether a student wants to run a small business or has the next big idea, Jake’s will provide a unique laboratory for learning,” said Lakeland President Beth Borgen.

LU students will benefit from Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education Grant

Lakeland University has received a grant of $250,000 from the Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education to fund several ongoing, student-centered programs.

The grant will support the Kohler Teaching Scholars program, the Lakeland Promise Program, LU’s free student shuttle and expansion of counseling services for students.

“We are grateful to the Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education for their ongoing funding and partnership with us,” said Lakeland President Beth Borgen. “Working together, we are creating the next generation of leaders and contributing citizens in our region.”

The Spring Career Fair Wraps Up After Reschedule

A big thank you to the employers and students who joined us for Lakeland’s Spring Career Opportunities Fair! Twenty-three employers from all over Wisconsin and several different industries spent a beautiful day on campus promoting their opportunities to students. Several employers reported speaking with multiple quality candidates and scheduling follow-up interviews. Good luck to those Muskies.

Faculty Spotlight

Kim Viglietti- Business

Please introduce yourself and your area of expertise.

Hello, my name is Kim Viglietti. I am a faculty member in Lakeland’s School of Business, Science & Technology. I have industry experience coming from Kohler Company as a global product manager. My area of expertise is marketing.

Tell me about Lakeland’s Business programs, what makes us unique from other schools?

Lakeland’s business programs are unique because you not only have a great student-instructor ratio but you receive hands-on experience. We adopt real-world projects that see students take complete ownership. Their critical thinking skills come into play in the classroom.

How has Co-Op positively impacted your program?

Co-Op has most definitely positively impacted my marketing program by allowing students to apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to real life in the career/job setting. We may be a small school, but we have a lot of great relationships built with great companies in the greater Sheboygan County area.  For example, my marketing capstone class is working on “Elk”toberfest for the Elkhart Lake Chamber. They have put together a marketing plan, budget, and grant proposal and will present their final plan to the chamber board.

If you could reach out to potential employers about your students and our business programs, what would you say to them?

I would tell potential employers to choose the LU candidate over any others. We know our students aren’t afraid to work and with the close mentorship of a faculty member and site advisor it will be a win-win situation. The experience as a Co-Op student will make that student more employable once they have graduated.
