2022 Sept – LU Parent Newsletter

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A Message for the Families of our Students,

Thank you for entrusting us with your loved one. For more than 160 years, the Lakeland community has been privileged to support young adults during their transformative educational journey.  As a parent myself, I know how challenging this new adventure must be for you as the supporter from afar. Please encourage your loved one to lean into the support systems offered on our campus – whether it be faculty, tutoring, athletic coaches, resident assistants, the Chaplain’s office or counselors. Our community is here to ensure students have all the resources inside and outside the classroom to fulfill their personal, academic and career goals.

Each fall, the following message is shared with our new students: Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. Take care of this place. In that spirit, I encourage you to teach your loved one how to advocate for themselves, while also looking out for their neighbors and the broader community.

Once again, thank you for becoming a part of the extended Lakeland family.

Sincerely,
Beth Borgen

CAMPUS LIFE STAFF SPOTLIGHT

DAVID SIMON

VP for Campus Life
Dean for Campus Life

Dear Muskies parents and families,

As a fellow parent (and proud Muskie dad!), we are so pleased you and your student have chosen Lakeland University. This is exciting as a new chapter begins with a new academic year.

My name is David R. Simon Jr. I have been at Lakeland for 12 years and currently serve as Lakeland’s vice president for campus life and dean for students. Our role here is to support students outside the classroom through community building, leadership opportunities, student organizations and clubs, and health and well-being so that students can succeed in and out of the classroom as they navigate their college experiences.  It’s a role we feel privileged to do and share with you through our Parent’s Newsletter.

I am honored to lead the Department of Campus Life, which includes nine divisions: Dining Services, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Department for Campus Safety, Shuttle Operations, Health Clinic, Counseling Services, Mail & Package Services, and the Office for Title IX.

Students are at the center of our mission. Whether fostering a vibrant life outside the classroom or providing resources around physical and mental health, we care about our students’ total experience at LU.

We have numerous student services, but sometimes students hesitate to reach out for help and assistance. This is where you come in. Encourage your student to explore services and options for getting involved at LU. If they have a problem or need assistance, we are available to support them. The Lauer Student Engagement Center is an excellent place for your student to find help if they’re unsure where to go.

We are excited to welcome our new and returning Muskies and help them make the most of their time here. Thank you for being part of our community. We look forward to being on this journey together with you.

David R. Simon Jr.

Vice president for Campus Life and Dean for Students
