Lakeland’s Essence of Heritage event is headed for the big stage!
Join us Saturday, February 24, for the 2024 Black History Month celebration “Essence of the Arts” at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Sheboygan.
This free event will be a showcase of local talent featuring spoken word, dance, song and step performances.
The event’s keynote speaker will be entrepreneur and 2003 Lakeland graduate James C. Hayes.
What does Cooperative Education do for you?
Lakeland launched an ongoing series to give you the chance to meet some of the students who are maximizing their Lakeland experience by participating in our unique Cooperative Education program.
Lakeland is the only school in the Midwest offering students an opportunity to earn a full year of academic credit for their work experience. LU students can earn up to 25% of the degree through work and post-work reflection.
Each year, we welcomed more students who are interested in the benefits of Co-Op and the ability to connect with a lengthy list of corporate and organizational partners who support the program and our student’s learning.
Lakeland part of state’s first teacher apprenticeship program
Many Wisconsin school districts are struggling to hire, train and retain teachers. Lakeland is part of a new partnership designed to help.
Lakeland has partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges and employer school districts to launch Wisconsin’s first teacher apprenticeship program.
“As a longtime leader in innovative educational offerings, we are proud to be involved in another first-of-its kind offering in Wisconsin,” said Lakeland President Beth Borgen. “This partnership leverages our strong relationships with the state’s technical colleges and our commitment to learning that happens on the job through our Cooperative Education program.”
Lakeland wins Ceil De Prey Peace Award
Lakeland was awarded a Ceil De Prey Peace Award earlier this month for “its commitment to academic excellence, diversity and respect, service and stewardship, integrity and responsibility, and faith and religious expression.”
Lakeland is the 10th winner of the award and the first of 2024.
The award is named for Sheboygan, Wis., peace activist Ceil De Prey and honors individuals and organizations whose work, volunteerism and advocacy contribute to peace, a stronger democracy and a better, more inclusive world for future generations.

Lakeland honors December grads
In December, family and friends recently gathered at Lakeland University to celebrate more than 30 new graduates at a reception sponsored by Student Life.
Joseph Reyes, of Pico River, Calif., spoke on behalf of the graduates. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and played soccer. He landed a job at Johnsonville through Lakeland’s Cooperative Education program which he said proved pivotal in his development.
“The real-world experience gained through this program has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of what it’s like living an adult life,” Reyes said.
