IS YOUR STUDENT FEELING HOMESICK?

It is not uncommon after the first month of the term for the “rush” of the college transition to decline, shifting sometimes to homesickness or a sense of sadness.  This is a normal process, and one that you may have opportunity to discuss with your student.

The wonderful staff at Lakeland’s Counseling Center offer a few recommendations for these conversations:

  1. Validate your student’s emotions; recognize that their emotions are real.
  2. Answer the phone when they call when possible. If you are not able to answer, send a text and let them know when you can talk.
  3. Encourage your student to discuss their feelings with someone they trust, such as their RAs, Academic Advisor, a professor. Lakeland offers free counseling services — please can refer them to The Counseling Center. (counselingcenter@lakeland.edu)
  4. Take advantage of the technology available to you, such as FaceTime, Zoom and WhatsApp.
  5. Encourage them to go out and get involved; there are lots of on-campus clubs and organizations to join, and if they don’t see one that suits them, they can create one!
  6. Send care packages that include reminders of home.
  7. Give them something to look forward to; possibly plan a weekend to come visit. (Homecoming / Fall Break = October 14-15)
  8. Remind them that other students are experiencing similar feelings; they are not alone. 70% of students report feeling homesick or lonely when starting college.
  9. Know they will be OK!

Our team can assist with homesickness, anxiety, stress, adjustment to college and many other issues.

CAMPUS LIFE STAFF SPOTLIGHT

LaJill Edge

Director of Student Activities and Engagement

Hello LU Parents!

My name is LaJill Edge, and I serve as director of student activities and engagement. I have worked for Lakeland for six years in various departments and graduated from Lakeland with my bachelor’s in 2020 and master’s in 2021. My responsibility is to host activities and events on campus.

The best part about Lakeland is the students. I have learned just as much from them as they have learned from me. They are energetic, and I enjoy meeting and speaking with them.

I look forward to watching them grow personally and professionally each year, and I am here to help support their journeys however I can.

Sincerely,

LaJill Edge

Director of Student Activities and Engagement
