March 2024 – Muskie Pride

Essence of Heritage

We had the best night celebrating Black History Month at Essence of the Arts with Black-American Community Outreach at the Weill Center for the Performing Arts. Special thank you to 2003 Lakeland graduate James Hayes for delivering a powerful keynote message, as well as all our other talented performers. A truly special event!

Lakeland University Golf Outing: The Blasters

Join us for Lakeland University’s annual golf tournament — The Blasters — on Friday, June 14, at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wis.

Event proceeds will directly benefit Lakeland University’s Launch: Student-Run Businesses.

Can’t participate? There are still plenty of ways to get involved and help make a difference in the lives of our students.

Lakeland students will benefit from Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education grant

Lakeland University has received a $540,000 grant from the Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education to fund several student-centered programs and initiatives.

The grant will support Lakeland’s Kohler Teaching Scholars program, the Lakeland Promise Program, the Sheboygan County Scholars program and a new lighting system in LU’s Bradley Theatre.

“The Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education has been an important partner for us, and we are grateful for their ongoing support,” said Lakeland President Beth Borgen. “Their investment in our students is helping us create the next generation of leaders and contributing citizens in our region.”

Greg Rutzen joins Lakeland as VP for Advancement & University Relations

We are excited to welcome Greg Rutzen, a veteran of more than 25 years of fundraising, to Lakeland as VP for Advancement & University Relations.

“I’m excited to be part of the Lakeland family and its tradition of innovation and entrepreneurial approaches to leading students to their educational goals,” Rutzen said.

“I look forward to meeting with our many alumni and supporters to hear the stories of how Lakeland has positively impacted their lives.”

Join us in welcoming Greg to Lakeland!

Lakeland nominee for awards at 2024 Sheboygan County Chamber Champions Gala

Lakeland was a nominee for a pair of awards as part of the 2024 Sheboygan County Chamber Champions Gala.

Lakeland and Rocky Knoll Health Care Center were nominated for the Working Together Award.

Launch: Lakeland Student-Run Businesses was nominated for the Professional Service Organization of the Year.

Lakeland and Rocky Knoll are working together to add more caregivers to the workforce in Sheboygan County by optimizing Lakeland University’s Cooperative Program, which provides wages and academic credit to students who work in full- and part-time jobs with Co-Op member companies and organizations.

The partnership offers an accelerated certified nurse aide (CNA) training program during Lakeland’s academic breaks, and Rocky Knoll Health Care Center works directly with Lakeland’s exercise sports science program to recruit caregivers and educate on the career possibilities within skilled nursing.

Launch: Lakeland Student-Run Businesses is a venture that empowers students to take charge of their own entrepreneurial journeys. Through Launch, students are provided with the tools and support to create, develop and manage income-generating businesses. These experiences offer a paid opportunity for students and serve as a platform to cultivate cooperative skills and develop strong leadership capabilities.

Launch currently operates four businesses: Musko’s Campus Shop, which is Lakeland’s only apparel story; an event planning business; Lakeland Content Writers, which provides a wide array of marketing and other writing for businesses and organizations; and Elementastic, which provides a range of educational offerings, including after-school programs, interactive science shows, in-school field trips, and public and company events.

Launch is one of just three student-run business ventures in the state, including Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Launch currently offers the most robust program and business lineup of the three.

Cooperative Education at Lakeland University

Lakeland launched an ongoing series to give you the chance to meet some of the students who are maximizing their Lakeland experience by participating in our unique Cooperative Education program.

Lakeland is the only school in the Midwest offering students an opportunity to earn a full year of academic credit for their work experience. LU students can earn up to 25% of the degree through work and post-work reflection.

Each year, we welcomed more students who are interested in the benefits of Co-Op and the ability to connect with a lengthy list of corporate and organizational partners who support the program and our student’s learning.

Giving Back

Lakeland is successful because of people like you.

Whether you are an alum or a friend of the university, we are so thankful for the support. Each gift directly impacts our students and their futures.

Muskies Helping Muskies

Our alumni are represented in a variety of work environments and are eager to share advice and help our current students!

Whether it is mentoring, job shadowing or helping with practice interviews, there are many opportunities to assist current Muskies in their education. Are you ready to help another Muskie out?

Help us keep in touch with you!

You enjoy reading news about your classmates and friends – they would love to read about you, too. Did you move? Get married? Get a new job? Let us know so we can keep you informed and include your changes in the “Alma Matters” section of the magazine.
