Lakeland to welcome three new Sheboygan County Scholars

Lakeland University will welcome its 12th class of Sheboygan County Scholars to campus this fall.

This program retains some of the area's most promising young people and prepares them to assume future leadership positions within the region.

The Class of 2030 includes:

  • Bryn Adams, Sheboygan North High School
  • Aaron Cortez, Sheboygan North High School
  • Tessa Schmidt, Howards Grove High School

Scholars are selected as part of a competitive process and receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend Lakeland. The program fosters the intellectual development, professional networking and leadership skills of the next generation of Sheboygan County's corporate, professional and civic leaders.

Adams has taken on leadership roles at North, including helping with the incoming freshman open house event as a knowledgeable and approachable resource to help students feel welcomed and informed. A member of the North girl’s basketball team, she also works closely with the yearbook editor and advisor during non-school days to meet production deadlines and improve the overall quality of the publication. She contributed to organization, layout decisions and problem solving to ensure the yearbook reflected the best of North’s community.

Adams plans to study marketing with an emphasis in digital marketing and play for the Muskies women’s basketball team.

Cortez has a strong academic foundation marked by 14 consecutive times on the high honor roll and induction into North’s National Honor Society. He works for Cortez Home Rentals where he is responsible for managing rent, interacting with tenants and managing supplies. Other roles include North High’s Blue Crew program where he mentors incoming freshmen to help them feel comfortable at their new school and working for TopSoccer, an organization that gives kids with disabilities the opportunity to play soccer.

Cortez plans to study business and play for the Muskies soccer team.

Schmidt has a lengthy list of involvement at Howards Grove including National Honor Society, singing in the choir, participating in musical theatre and the dance team as well as numerous community service activities. She is a member of the Tigers basketball and softball teams and looks forward to joining Lakeland’s golf team. She has excelled academically and taken CAPP and AP courses to position herself for college.

Schmidt plans to major in exercise science with the goal of being accepted to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
