Launch planning this weekend’s Sheboygan Gus Macker
Sheboygan’s Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held this weekend, July 31 and Aug. 1, at the Harbor Centre Marina on the Lake Michigan shoreline. This is the 26th year the Macker is being held in Sheboygan.
A Special Olympics event will happen Friday, July 30, at 5 p.m.
The two-day tournament is open to players of all ages and abilities for a weekend spent on the basketball court and at the beach. This year’s Macker is being planned by Launch: Lakeland Student-Run Businesses.
Launch Event Planner Ali Wilson said, “I am excited for Gus Macker to be in Sheboygan and to be the only Gus Macker in Wisconsin. This will be one of the first events back since COVID hit us over 15 months ago, so it will be nice to have a little normalcy back.”
Dozens of dedicated workers run the Gus Macker, and approximately 216 teams are expected to take to the courts in 3-on-3 play.
“We are pleased with the number of teams we have participating, and we are anticipating a great turnout of fans throughout the weekend,” Wilson stated.
In addition to tournament play, there will be a slam-dunk contest, a dream court for the mini-Mackers and more. Food sold by Lakeland’s Dining Services will be available onsite, featuring Johnsonville brats.
Launch took over planning the event from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sheboygan County.
“I have been very fortunate to have this opportunity to plan and implement the Gus Macker,” Wilson said. “It is a great example of all the opportunities that are given to Lakeland students.”
Launch’s mission is to transform Lakeland students into the next generation of innovative leaders by providing paid experiential and entrepreneurial learning opportunities that prepare students for diverse careers in a multi-faceted world.
