Lakeland Senior Shares Literary Perspective in Published Book Review

Another Lakeland University student is seeing her writing reach a broader audience, with a book review recently published in The Lakeland Zasshi, a publication showcasing the work of students, faculty, staff and alumni from Lakeland University, Virginia Wesleyan University and Lakeland University Japan.

Faith Loman, a senior psychology major with a minor in writing at Lakeland, is the author of the recently published review of Wonder Wheel, a 2026 poetry collection by author Chelsea Whitton, published by LSU Press.

In her review, Loman explores themes of identity, relationships, motherhood, memory and the passage of time, considering how Whitton's poetry captures the experiences of women navigating different stages of life.

For Loman, having her work published is both an exciting accomplishment and an opportunity to reflect on how far she has come as a writer.

"The fact that people have read what I wrote and deemed it something that should be shared is astonishing to me," Loman said. "It's like a big mirror. I'm seeing how much I've grown in my writing and how I've matured to reach a point where my own work can be featured."

When she first arrived at Lakeland, Loman was deciding between majoring in psychology or English. She ultimately chose psychology and added a writing minor, an area she says has always been an important part of her life.

"Writing has always been a large part of my life. It's where I can best describe my own experiences and emotions in a thoughtful way that helps me to ruminate and digest them," she said.

She has also found that the skills developed through her writing courses carry over into her psychology studies, strengthening her ability to think critically and communicate ideas clearly.

Loman credits Lakeland writing faculty, including Professors Mortag and Wattenberg, for encouraging students to share their work and pursue publication opportunities. From classroom instruction to Lakeland's Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium, she says their support has helped build her confidence as a writer.

"They often tell us in class that our work is worth being shared and the worst you can hear is no," Loman said. "I will always be grateful for their support and how they have helped my confidence grow."

Loman has also contributed to The Mirror, Lakeland's student-run website, as both a writer and photographer.

The Lakeland Zasshi provides a platform for creative and scholarly work from the Lakeland community, connecting voices across Lakeland's Wisconsin and Tokyo campuses and its partnership with Virginia Wesleyan University.
