Lakeland University expands international partnerships in Luxembourg

Lakeland University is expanding its international connections in Luxembourg through a strengthened student exchange relationship with the University of Luxembourg and a new partnership with École d’Hôtellerie et de Tourisme du Luxembourg (EHTL). The relationships will provide opportunities for Lakeland students to study in Luxembourg, while creating new pathways for students at the partner institutions to take Lakeland courses and pursue a Lakeland degree.

Lakeland has maintained a student exchange agreement with the University of Luxembourg for several years. The strengthened relationship will provide opportunities for University of Luxembourg students to study at Lakeland University and for current Lakeland students to study at the University of Luxembourg through more directed pathways.

Lakeland also recently established a partnership with EHTL, a Luxembourg institution focused on hospitality and tourism education. The relationship creates an academic pathway between the two institutions, including an opportunity for EHTL students to take Lakeland courses 100% online from Luxembourg as part of their path toward a Lakeland degree.

Exchange experiences can be structured around a semester or shorter experiences of as little as two weeks, giving students flexibility in how they incorporate an international experience into their education.

“These partnerships are another way we can expand the global reach of a Lakeland education,” said Lakeland President Beth Borgen. “Learning alongside people from different countries and experiencing other cultures gives students perspectives and experiences they can carry with them throughout their lives.”

The partnerships also align with Lakeland’s emphasis on experiential learning, giving students opportunities to learn in environments beyond the traditional classroom and apply what they learn while experiencing another culture.

“International experiences are a meaningful part of the student experience,” said Jonathan Feld, Lakeland’s vice president for student affairs & enrollment management. “These partnerships give our students more ways to study abroad while also creating opportunities for students from Luxembourg to experience an American education.”

Lakeland’s relationship with Luxembourg also has a geographic connection. Luxembourgish immigrants have historical ties to Wisconsin, including the area surrounding Lakeland’s main campus in Sheboygan County.

The Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Center is located in nearby Belgium, Wis., and works to preserve the roots of Luxembourgish heritage and nurture the ongoing relationships between Luxembourg and America.

The partnerships are part of Lakeland’s broader effort to expand the global experience of a Lakeland education. In addition to its Wisconsin campus, Lakeland operates Lakeland University - Japan (LUJ), which was established in Tokyo in 1991 and now serves more than 500 students from more than 40 countries.

Students interested in international study opportunities through these partnerships should contact their Study Abroad office to learn more about available programs and eligibility.
