"Surviving the Lectionary" Workshop

The lectionaries used by Roman Catholic (LM) and many Protestant communities (RCL) help believers remember and celebrate pivotal events in the story of God’s people. They also lead believers to reflect on what it means to be faithful followers of Christ. In doing so, lectionaries provide several notable benefits for congregations.

But lectionaries also lead pastors and their congregations to treat the Bible in ways that do not honor what kind of work it is and where it came from. They encourage distorted readings of Scripture that take biblical passages out of context. They lead Christians to simplify the richness of the Bible’s testimony, and overlook its literary artistry.

Drawing from his book, Reading the Bible Badly: How American Christians Misunderstand and Misuse their Scriptures (Cascade, 2020), Karl Kuhn will unveil the shortcomings of lectionaries, the challenges they present for believing communities, and how to overcome them.

Cost of this workshop is $25. All proceeds will support scholarships for Lakeland's Social Justice Camp for high school students, summer 2023.
