    • Subsidized loans have the interest subsidy. The Dept. of Education pays the interest while you are enrolled at least half time and during the six-month grace period. Available to undergraduate students with financial need.
    • Unsubsidized loans do not have an interest subsidy. Interest accumulates during all periods of enrollment, and you are responsible for paying this interest. Available to undergraduate and graduate students.
    • The financial aid budget is NOT what you will be billed. It is designed to include all potential educational costs a student may encounter. A budget is made up of direct (billable) and indirect (not billable) costs that are either actual costs or estimated costs.
    • The direct costs include Tuition and Fees, and average Room & Board costs (if residing on campus); however, your costs for room and board will vary from what is listed in the budget. Since we have many options for room and board, the amount listed is an average of the most common room and board options used by our current students.
    • The indirect costs include Books & Supplies, Miscellaneous, and Transportation. If a student is a commuter, the room and board budget is also an average of indirect costs for housing and meals. Miscellaneous costs might include any other things you need to purchase for daily living while in college—personal care items, clothing, laundry supplies, etc. Transportation costs can include any costs associated with traveling to and from college—gas, auto insurance, maintenance, etc. The amounts listed for each of these categories are estimated and the actual amounts that students spend for each of these categories can vary greatly from student to student.

            • Parent can apply for this through https://studentaid.gov/plus-app/parent/landing by logging in with parent FSA ID. If approved, parent can request a specific dollar amount. Repayment begins either 60 days after last disbursement or parent can request repayment to begin after the student graduates or no longer attends college in at least 6 credits.
            • If denied the loan, the student automatically becomes eligible for an additional unsubsidized loan for $4,000-$5,000.
          • Alternative (Private) student loans
            • There are many private companies that offer student loans. Visit this website: https://choice.fastproducts.org/FastChoice/home/385400/1 to view where Lakeland students have borrowed in the last 6 years. This website will also allow you to compare each lender side by side to determine the best option for you and apply directly online.
        • A refund will generate if you have an excess of financial aid. If you have MORE financial aid than what is due on your student account, you will get “refunded” that money.
        • Returning a refund to the financial aid office will result in a direct reduction in the total amount of loans that you borrowed.
        • If you received a refund check, you can write “VOID” across the check and return it to the financial aid office with a note stating you want the funds returned to your student loans.
        • If you received a direct deposit. You can send a check to the financial aid office in the amount that you’d like returned and include a note stating you want the funds returned to your student loans.
        • If you see that you are getting a refund before the financial aid disburses, you can contact the financial aid office and ask that your loan is reduced.

          • Make sure all student employment paperwork is turned in so you can start work and get paid.
        • You can choose to sign up for payroll deductions with the Student Accounts Office. This allows you to have a portion, or all, of your paycheck automatically applied to your student account balance. Email StudentAccounts@lakeland.edu for more information.
        • If all aid is disbursed to your student account, aid will typically remain as is. If aid has not disbursed (because missing MPN and entrance counseling for example), we need to recalculate financial aid based on current enrolled credits. It is advised to check with financial aid before withdrawing from a class.
        • If you are withdrawing prior to 60% of the term, the financial aid office is required to return any “unearned” financial aid, which can leave you with a large student account balance. There is a calculation that is done to determine how much financial aid is “earned”. Make sure you talk to the financial aid office to learn what your options are.
