This multidisciplinary minor explores how societies throughout history have thought about and reacted to differences in race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. These courses attend to the roles and experiences of women and minorities in American culture and abroad. More fundamentally, though, they ask us to reflect upon and rethink our own current understanding of these powerful and political categories.

Diversity Studies at Lakeland University

A Multidisciplinary Minor

The Diversity Studies program addresses problems and issues that are as old as human culture.

Lakeland's Diversity Studies minor aims at developing sensitivity and acknowledgement of differences among people while maintaining common values and acknowledging the need to work collectively. The perspectives encouraged by this program, along with the analytical skills it develops, help to prepare students for post-graduate study in law, the social sciences, and literature, as well as careers in business and education.

Students who have successfully completed a minor in Diversity Studies at Lakeland University will be able to:

  • Identify, define, and apply basic concepts related to the study of racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and religious diversity.
  • Explain the intersectionality of racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and religious identities and how they shape social interactions – both generally and in specific examples.
  • Explain the historical and current discriminatory privileging of some racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and religious identities over others.
  • Explain specific strategies for promoting greater racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and religious freedom, equality, and justice.
  • Communicate with others in ways that are clear, respectful, and evidence driven.

First Time Freshman

  • Step 1: Complete an application online.
  • Step 2: Submit official high school transcripts directly to Lakeland University.

Transfer Students

  • Step 1: Complete an application online.
  • Step 2: Request official transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended to be sent directly to Lakeland University.
    • Students who have NOT completed 12 transferrable credits MUST submit official high school transcripts.

Admission Requirements

Once your application is received, your Lakeland University admissions counselor will be in touch.

  • Lakeland University accepts a high school diploma with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above or the equivalent of a high school diploma.
  • Lakeland University accepts transfer students who have earned at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and are in good standing at other accredited institutions of higher learning.
  • We review each application on an individual basis.

*Exceptions to the above admission criteria may be granted for students with a cumulative GPA range from 1.75 to 1.99 if the academic experience that resulted in the less than 2.0 GPA was more than two years ago. Furthermore, typically students with a cumulative GPA range from 1.50 to 1.75 will only be considered if the poor academic performance experience that resulted in the less than 2.0 GPA was more than five years ago. Students receiving an exception will be admitted conditionally.
