Lakeland Professor Publishes Water-Inspired Poetry in Green Humanities

Lakeland Assistant Professor of Writing Madeleine Wattenberg, Ph.D., recently published three poems in Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy, and the Arts.

This issue of Green Humanities is themed around water, so each on her poems is in some way inspired by water.

“‘Looking Back’ features a well-known sight to anyone in Sheboygan, the red lighthouse on North Pier,” Wattenberg said. “I wrote ‘Severe Weather Alert’ after receiving a text alert about dangerous waves on Lake Michigan and a particularly frustrating visit to the doctor. Collectively, the poems consider what water reveals to us about different ways of seeing and paying attention.”

One poem was written about the library at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) during her 2024 artist residency. UMBS published a write-up sharing the poem and the library's history.
