College graduates on average earn more money and are less likely to be unemployed than those without a degree.
This exploratory first-year program may be a good fit for you if you are:
This is a one-year college introduction program for students planning to work right out of high school. At the conclusion of this program, students will chart out their future plans selecting from a variety of options:
The collaboration between Lakeland and its partner employers has made this program very affordable:
Because benefits vary by employer, the out-of-pocket expense to individual students will vary. However, we believe the combination of support from LU, the employer, and through federal financial aid—if the student qualifies—will make attending college very affordable!
We encourage all applicants to complete a FAFSA to see if they are eligible for federal financial aid.
We believe students should never have to choose between college and work. Learning on the job, when combined with guided reflection, is simply a better way to learn.
What programs can I enroll in?
Lakeland offers many attractive programs that lead to degrees in business, the sciences, the humanities, and the arts. Examples include programs in Hospitality Management, Industrial Analytics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, and Food Safety and Quality. You can visit Lakeland.edu/degrees to see all of Lakeland’s programs. After completing the first year, you will be able to continue in any degree program Lakeland offers to earn an associate or bachelor’s degree.
How many classes will I take a semester?
Students will enroll in several classes in fall and spring semesters; some courses address core knowledge while others address career skills and will be completed primarily on the job. We attempt to connect learning across classes and workplace experiences, so it is relevant and meaningful.
How is instruction organized and delivered?
Students will have the same advisor and attend most of their classes together on Lakeland’s main campus so they can support one another, which we refer to as a learning community. The majority of coursework is delivered face-to-face or on the job.
Will I be able to take part in student life activities on the LU campus?
This program is offered through LU’s Kellett School, which is designed for busy working adults. Therefore, the emphasis is on completing coursework leading to a certificate or degree rather than participating in traditional student life such as living in a dormitory, playing a sport, or singing in the choir. That said, Kellett students, as a part of their enrollment, have access to many Lakeland programs, services, and facilities including LU’s wellness center.
Are the admission requirements for this program the same as other programs at Lakeland?
Students who wish to participate in this program need to apply for admission following the university’s standard process including submitting high school transcripts. Entrance tests such as ACT are optional. Additionally, applicants will complete an interview with university staff to determine readiness for the unique career opportunities offered through this program. Finally, applicants will complete an interview with a partner employer. In order to study in this program, candidates must be hired by an employer who is also participating in this program.
Do I get to select the employer I work for?
Yes and no. To participate, you will need to be hired by one of our partner employers. You can choose who you apply to work for, but the employer must also choose to employ you. Interviews with employers will be scheduled prior to the start of the program.
