Make a Gift

Many employers offer the opportunity to match all or a portion of a donor’s gift to the university. In essence, a matching gift program can double or even triple the impact of a gift! If you or your company is participating in a matching gift program, please contact Executive Assistant for the Advancement Office, Sam Jessup at 920-565-1023 ext. 2161 or advancement@lakeland.edu to inform us that the matching gift will be made.

Matching Gifts

Giving long-term appreciated properties provides three potential ways for tax savings. For example, a gift of appreciated stock* will help you:

  1. Avoid capital gains tax on the increase in value of your stock.
  2. Receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift.
  3. Reduce the value of the donors' taxable estate by the amount of the gift.

Finally, you can direct your gift towards a specific fund, scholarship, or program, just as you can with any other gift to Lakeland.

* All appreciated property must be long-term and owned for at least one year and a day. Always consult your personal tax advisor to learn how a gift of appreciated property can benefit both you and Lakeland University.

PLEASE NOTE: The value of your gift and the date of the gift are both determined by the date of the transfer, which is the date Lakeland University receives the appreciated property.

To give gifts of appreciated property:
  1. Notify the Lakeland University Advancement Office. Call or email your name, the name of the securities/stocks/funds, and number of shares to:

Are you over 70.5? Want to reduce your taxable income AND help support Lakeland University? Qualified charitable distributions (QCD) directly from an IRA are one of the most tax-savvy ways to give*.

Benefits of a QCD
  • Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from your or your spouse’s IRA to Lakeland University (Annually).
  • Satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
  • Avoid taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions.
  • Finally, you can direct your gift towards a specific fund, scholarship, or program OR simply to Lakeland’s greatest need, just as you can with any other gift.

*PLEASE NOTE: QCDs do not qualify for a charitable deduction but do avoid your taxable income, always consult your personal tax advisor to learn how a QCD can benefit both you and Lakeland University.

To direct a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA:
  1. Contact your IRA custodian and direct them to make a gift from your IRA to Lakeland University. Request that your name be included with the transfer information so we can thank you for your gift! They can mail it to:

Planned gifts, most often called "non-cash gifts," "net-worth gifts" or "deferred gifts," are generally given through a donor's asset base rather than with cash or discretionary income. Through planned gifts, people make provisions for the university during their lifetimes, but the university does not receive benefits until a future date.

Benefits of planned gifts may include:

  • Increased income throughout the lives of the donor, a second beneficiary and in some cases, other people or younger family members (often children).
  • A charitable income tax deduction.
  • Relief from capital gains on appreciated property contributed.
  • A potential estate tax deduction.
  • The ability to direct how you want Lakeland University to use the charitable portion of your gift.
  • Membership in the university's Founders Society.

Are you interested in learning more about planned giving? Please contact Associate Vice President of Advancement, Tylor S. Loest, CFRE at 920-565-1023 ext. 2153 or loestts@lakeland.edu.
