LU hosts Black History Month chapel service
Lakeland University will celebrate Black History Month with a service in the Ley Chapel on Thursday, February 5, at 5 p.m.
The event will showcase Lakeland students Canaya Hayes-Jenkins, Olivia Hovey and Raynisha Sims who will perform a spoken-word poem.
The keynote speaker is Teon Austin, a father, educator and trainer who serves as the director for inclusion and belonging for the Dental School at Marquette University.
He is a proud Trio Alum and has gone on to participate in the African American Leadership Alliance Milwaukee’s African American Leadership Program (AALP) and was recognized by the Milwaukee Times for Excellence in Education.
He graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in marketing and went on to receive his master's of leadership studies with a nonprofit management specialization and he has completed doctoral coursework in higher education leadership at Cardinal Stritch University. He is currently researching cultural competence and its impact on faculty-student relationships at Tiffin University.
The program will also include 2017 Lakeland graduate Serina Jones, a member of Beta Psi Nu sorority. She was a campus ambassador who studied music, nonprofit studies and criminal justice. She loved theater and played Motor Mouth Mabelle in Hairspray and she sang for events like International Night and Essence of Heritage. She currently lives in Milwaukee with her four children.
