Most colleges offer an Accounting Degree, but our degree will make you more attractive to employers than most. Why? Because at Lakeland, you won’t just learn how to crunch numbers and balance books. You will get out of the classroom and apply your knowledge in a real-world setting. And that’s exactly what employers want to see on a resume.
Lakeland's accounting major, trains students to be economic problem-solvers and analysts, professionals who are able to identify, measure and make judgments about all types of economic information. These accounting skills lead to rewarding positions in financial and tax planning, business consulting, bookkeeping, auditing and many other fields in the global marketplace. In addition, with a few additional courses, the Lakeland accounting major qualifies its students to sit for the CPA and CMA examinations.
Our accounting program is comprehensive. You will be exposed to financial accounting (record-keeping); managerial accounting (budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning); tax accounting and many other facets of this popular field.
“But we also offer a lot of flexibility in terms of emphasis tracks,” Killion says. “We have a fraud and forensics emphasis track and we have a finance and insurance track as well.”
White collar corporate crime is a growing problem in our society. We are one of only a few United States colleges that offer a fraud and forensic emphasis accounting degree. That’s a source of pride for us, and a valuable option for you.
Real-world experiences are critical components of any top-of-the-stack resume. At Lakeland, we value work and experiential learning. Whether you have prior work experience, want to get work experience but have a busy schedule, or are interested in our traditional Cooperative Education program, there is an abundance of opportunities to get hands-on experience and earn academic credit for your work!
“We certainly provide all the necessary technical knowledge, but the link between classroom learning and actual experience in the field is what’s most valuable,” says Killion. “We really emphasize becoming a strong professional and helping students get that actual experience, so when they go out into the work world, they’re prepared to be great employees.”
Traditional Students (Main Campus): Lakeland's Cooperative Education program will provide 12-18 months of full-time work experience, academic credit for their work, and a combination of scholarships and wages that will significantly reduce or eliminate post-graduation debt.
Kellett School (Evening/Online): Earn academic credit toward your degree on the job – without stepping footing a traditional classroom! Whether it’s projects you’re already doing or much-needed tasks your boss doesn’t have time for – only Lakeland lets you earn academic credit for real-time work projects.
