History at Lakeland University

Interpreting the Past, Preparing the Future

Understanding the past will help you comprehend the present and prepare for the future.

History majors understand the world and their place in it.History students get a real chance to think about our world and the creation of their society in ways that perhaps other students don’t.

At Lakeland, the study of History also involves getting out of the classroom and immersing yourself in real-world learning. If it’s an archeology class, students will go out and do archeology. If we are studying ethnic history, students will go to a Historical Research Center, which is full of millions of documents, and research the immigration history of local people.

We understand the importance of learning by doing. That is why our Cooperative Education is all about hands-on learning outside the classroom. Students gain real-world knowledge and earn academic credit for hands-on professional work experience — and coursework is centered around these real-life experiences, situations and career goals.Lakeland students explore their interests and, when they graduate, feel confident they will find a career in which they are passionate.

Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in History from Lakeland University will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of history and the people, places, ideas, and major events that shaped it.
  • Construct evidence-based arguments using a variety of historical sources.
  • Communicate ideas clearly and professionally in both written and oral form.

What Makes Our Program Unique?

  • Pairs with an Education major for teaching certification
  • Unique classes such as The 1960s and the History of Rock and Roll
  • Field trips to the Chicago Field Museum and the Milwaukee Public Museum
  • Travel abroad opportunities
  • The History program is led by Professor Rick Dodgson, an Englishman who delights in teaching US history to American students.
  • Dr. Dodgson specializes in the history of the 1960s, particularly the life of Ken Kesey, author and celebrated counter-cultural icon. Dodgson's book on Kesey, It's all a Kind of Magic: the Young Ken Kesey (2010) was very well received and widely reviewed.
  • Dr. Dodgson is also a musician and composer. In the Spring of 2023, a production of his Mission to the Stars: A Space Rock Opera,  featuring a cast of students and local musicians, broke box office records at Lakeland.
